The two beautiful dogs in the headline picture, sadly no longer with us, gave my family and me endless hours if fun and entertainment and it pleases me to be able to include them both in one of my blog posts. Sammi, who we lost in 2022, and Sophi, who went in 2018, gave both enjoyment and love to all the family and are missed, and will continue to be missed.

So, if like me, you are a dog rather than a cat person, National Dog Day, celebrated annually on August 26th, is a tail-wagging celebration of our four-legged friends. It’s a day to honor the incredible bond between humans and dogs, and to raise awareness about the plight of dogs in need of homes.

This special day was founded in 2004 by animal advocate Colleen Paige. Her goal was to recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year and to acknowledge the many ways in which dogs work to improve our lives. From loyal companions to service animals, therapy dogs, and working K-9s, dogs play countless important roles in society.

On National Dog Day, dog owners often pamper their pooches with extra treats, longer walks, or new toys. Many shelters and rescue organizations use this day to promote adoption and fostering, organizing events to help find forever homes for dogs in need. It’s also a great time to consider volunteering at a local shelter or making a donation to support canine welfare.

The day serves as a reminder of the unconditional love and loyalty that dogs provide. They’re there for us through thick and thin, offering comfort during tough times and sharing in our joys. Whether it’s a welcoming wag when we come home or a sympathetic nuzzle when we’re feeling down, dogs have an uncanny ability to lift our spirits.

National Dog Day also highlights the importance of responsible pet ownership. This includes providing proper nutrition, regular veterinary care, exercise, and training. It’s a day to educate people about the commitment involved in dog ownership and to promote ethical breeding practices.

For those without dogs, it’s a chance to appreciate the positive impact these animals have on our world. From search and rescue operations to assisting individuals with disabilities, dogs contribute to society in numerous ways.

So on August 26th, take a moment to celebrate the dogs in your life or in your community. Whether it’s giving your own dog an extra belly rub or supporting a local animal shelter, there are many ways to mark this doggone special day.
