Not a search result. A fifteen-second video that landed in their feed at eleven o’clock the night before.

If that scenario feels increasingly familiar, you’re not imagining it. Search behaviour is genuinely splitting in two — and a lot of businesses are still optimising for only one half of it.

The shift

Nearly half of US consumers — 49% — say they’ve used TikTok as a search engine in 2026, up from 41% just two years ago. Among Gen Z specifically, that figure jumps to 65%. People aren’t just watching TikTok for entertainment anymore; they’re using it the way an older generation used Google — to find a restaurant, check if a product is worth buying, or learn how to do something.

How it actually works

The appeal isn’t really about search at all — it’s about format. Consumers say they turn to TikTok over traditional search for its short video format, its storytelling, and its interactivity. A written review tells you a blender is good. A fifteen-second video shows you the smoothie, the noise, the clean-up. For anything visual, experiential, or trust-based — food, beauty, travel, home fixes — that’s a meaningfully different kind of answer, and often a more convincing one.

The honest complication

Here’s the part that gets glossed over in most “TikTok is the new Google” takes: the enthusiasm is cooling, not accelerating. Among Gen Z, the share who say they’d actually rely on TikTok over Google for search has fallen from 8% in 2024 to just 4% in 2026. When consumers were asked which platform is genuinely most helpful for finding information, Google still won decisively at 85%, with TikTok trailing at 16%. The takeaway isn’t that TikTok is replacing search — it’s that it’s become a second, parallel discovery channel, strongest for browsing and inspiration, weaker for anything requiring depth, comparison, or authority.

The practical takeaway

Don’t move your SEO budget to TikTok — add TikTok discoverability alongside it. Make sure your first three seconds state clearly what you sell and where you are. Use on-screen text and captions, since TikTok’s own search still leans on them. And treat comments as a search interface in their own right — people scroll them the way they’d read reviews, so answer questions there as seriously as you’d answer an email enquiry.

The close

Google still wins the argument. TikTok wins the algorithm’s attention span in the meantime — and increasingly, that’s where the discovery happens first.

Genuinely curious — where does your business currently stand on this?

Are you showing up when people search TikTok, or is that still someone else’s job on your team?

Tell me in the comments.

A customer walks into your shop, picks up exactly the product they came for, and says, “I saw it on TikTok.” Not a Google ad.
