From where you’re sitting, it looks exactly like nothing happened. From where they’re sitting, the search worked perfectly.

This is the reality behind one of the biggest, quietest shifts in how the internet actually works. Recent research using clickstream data found that 68% of US Google searches ended without a single click during the first four months of 2026, up from around 60% just two years earlier. Put another way, of every 1,000 searches, only around 360 clicks now make it through to the open web at all. The rest are answered directly on the search results page and the user simply moves on.

AI Overviews have accelerated this considerably, but it’s worth being clear that they didn’t start the trend. The zero-click rate has been climbing steadily since 2019, driven initially by featured snippets and knowledge panels, long before generative AI search existed. What AI has done is pour fuel on an already-burning fire — when an AI Overview appears on a search, the zero-click rate jumps to around 83%, and inside Google’s newer AI Mode specifically, that figure rises as high as 93%.

The practical consequence for businesses is direct and measurable. Organic traffic declines of 15-34% have been recorded across sectors as a result of this shift, with B2B and content-driven businesses among the hardest hit. A page can rank well, be genuinely useful, and still receive meaningfully less traffic than it would have two years ago — not because the content got worse, but because fewer people are clicking through to anything, regardless of ranking.

There’s a real silver lining buried in the data, though, and it changes what “winning” actually looks like now. Brands that do get cited within an AI Overview earn 35% more organic clicks and convert visitors at 4-9 times the usual rate, because the person arriving has already been informed by your content before they even land on your site — they’re not browsing, they’re confirming. The click-through rate on AI Overview citations overall remains extremely low, around 1%, but the small number of people who do click through are unusually well-qualified.

The honest complication is that this genuinely changes what success needs to be measured by. A business still tracking clicks and traffic alone as its primary SEO metric is now missing most of the picture. Being present inside the answer — cited, mentioned, referenced — increasingly matters more than being clicked at all.

The practical takeaway is a shift in mindset rather than a technical overhaul: stop measuring success purely by traffic, and start asking whether your business is actually being mentioned, cited, and trusted inside the answers people are already getting — because a growing majority of your potential customers may never see your website at all, and that no longer means they didn’t find you.

The search still happened. You just weren’t in the room to see it.

Genuinely curious — have you noticed your own website traffic shift over the past year or two?
