The story’s going fine — the delivery drama, the argument about the cushion colour — right up until the number itself needs saying out loud. And then, without any warning or consultation with yourself, your voice drops half an octave and about 60% in volume, as though you’re passing on classified defence information rather than the price of soft furnishings.

“It was… [hushed tone]… nine hundred pounds.”

Nobody told you to do this. There’s no rule. You are, quite possibly, sitting alone in your own kitchen on the phone, with nobody within a hundred yards to overhear the scandalous truth about your sofa spend. And still, down goes the voice.

So why does a simple number get smuggled out like a secret?

Money carries what psychologists call a social taboo — not illegal, not shameful exactly, but sitting in a special category of topics we’ve been trained since childhood to treat with unusual delicacy. Somewhere along the way, most of us absorbed the message that discussing exact figures is a bit indelicate, a bit close to boasting or complaining, a bit too much information for polite conversation. That training runs so deep it fires automatically, even when the “polite company” you’re supposedly protecting is entirely imaginary.

There’s a second layer to it too, and it’s really about judgement rather than secrecy. A price tag invites an instant, silent verdict from whoever hears it — too much, too little, well that seems sensible — and lowering your voice is a small, subconscious attempt to soften that verdict before it even arrives. It’s less “don’t repeat this” and more “please don’t have too strong an opinion about what I just told you,” delivered entirely through volume rather than words.

Here’s the twist that makes it properly daft: we do this in reverse too. Tell someone about an absolute bargain — a designer coat for a fiver, a meal that cost next to nothing — and the volume often does the opposite, rising with pride rather than dropping with discretion. The hushed voice isn’t really about the money at all. It’s about which way you expect the judgement to land.

None of this changes anything about the sofa, of course. It’s still nine hundred pounds either way, whispered or shouted.

But at least now you know why you’re whispering it to an empty kitchen.

Key takeaway: We don’t lower our voice to protect the secret — we lower it to soften the judgement we expect the number to invite, even when nobody’s actually listening.

Funny thing is, the same psychology shows up online too — especially in the world of digital business. People whisper their spending offline, and online they whisper their earnings, their results, or the price of the tools they use. It’s all the same dance around judgement. Which is why I’m spending this week looking at the mechanics behind online income — the real stuff, not the hype. More on that later.

Why Do We Do That? Why Do We Lower Our Voice When We Say How Much Something Cost?
