{"id":1274,"date":"2026-07-20T09:29:13","date_gmt":"2026-07-20T09:29:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/davethomasonline.com\/blog\/?p=1274"},"modified":"2026-07-20T09:29:13","modified_gmt":"2026-07-20T09:29:13","slug":"gom-world-cup-diary-40","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/davethomasonline.com\/blog\/gom-world-cup-diary-40\/","title":{"rendered":"GOM World Cup Diary #40 Champions At Last!"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" data-section-id=\"1br9y8k\" data-start=\"103\" data-end=\"127\"><span role=\"text\"><strong data-start=\"105\" data-end=\"127\">GOM World Cup Diary #40 Champions At Last!<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1s1wnmj\" data-start=\"129\" data-end=\"174\"><span role=\"text\"><em data-start=\"132\" data-end=\"174\">Whatever Happened To Knowing Your Place?<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There comes a point in every football tournament when one team has to stop talking about winning the World Cup&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;and actually go and win it.<\/p>\n<p>Last night, Spain did exactly that.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t easy.<\/p>\n<p>It rarely is.<\/p>\n<p>Argentina arrived with all the determination you&#8217;d expect from a side desperate to lift football&#8217;s greatest prize, but they also brought a little too much of the darker side of the game with them.<\/p>\n<p>There were crunching tackles.<\/p>\n<p>Tempers simmered.<\/p>\n<p>One challenge earned a second yellow card that could quite easily have been shown as a straight red.<\/p>\n<p>Then, even after the final whistle, emotions spilled over once more.<\/p>\n<p>It was all a little unnecessary.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Spain simply got on with playing football.<\/p>\n<p>For almost the entire match they asked the questions.<\/p>\n<p>Wave after wave of attacks.<\/p>\n<p>Shot after shot.<\/p>\n<p>Mart\u00ednez produced save after save to keep Argentina alive and, for long periods, it looked as though Spain might be left wondering how they hadn&#8217;t already won it.<\/p>\n<p>Football has a habit of doing that.<\/p>\n<p>Dominate a game.<\/p>\n<p>Miss a few chances.<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly you&#8217;re looking over your shoulder wondering if you&#8217;ve tempted fate.<\/p>\n<p>Then, early in extra time, Ferran Torres finally found the breakthrough.<\/p>\n<p>A goal worthy of winning any World Cup Final.<\/p>\n<p>At last, Spain had the lead their football deserved.<\/p>\n<p>Even then, it wasn&#8217;t over.<\/p>\n<p>Spain missed opportunities to put the match beyond doubt and, with every wasted chance, you could almost feel the tension rising.<\/p>\n<p>Argentina sensed there might still be one last twist.<\/p>\n<p>With just minutes remaining they finally began to push forward with real intent, forcing Spain deeper and deeper.<\/p>\n<p>It all felt strangely familiar.<\/p>\n<p>England supporters will know exactly what I mean.<\/p>\n<p>But this time, Spain held their nerve.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes the hardest thing in football isn&#8217;t scoring the winning goal.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s believing you&#8217;ve already done enough.<\/p>\n<p>Spain did.<\/p>\n<p>When the final whistle finally arrived, they were worthy World Champions.<\/p>\n<p>Not because they had the biggest names.<\/p>\n<p>Not because they enjoyed the luckiest decisions.<\/p>\n<p>But because throughout this tournament they trusted their football.<\/p>\n<p>They attacked.<\/p>\n<p>They stayed disciplined.<\/p>\n<p>They kept believing in the way they wanted to play.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, football rewarded the team that spent more time trying to play than trying to stop the opposition playing.<\/p>\n<p>Then came the trophy presentation.<\/p>\n<p>And it reminded me of something that has nothing to do with football.<\/p>\n<p>There are moments in life that belong entirely to someone else.<\/p>\n<p>Your job is to applaud.<\/p>\n<p>Congratulate them.<\/p>\n<p>Shake their hand.<\/p>\n<p>Then quietly step aside and let them enjoy what they&#8217;ve earned.<\/p>\n<p>The spotlight belongs to the people who created the moment, not those invited to witness it.<\/p>\n<p>Knowing your place isn&#8217;t a weakness.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes it&#8217;s the greatest sign of respect.<\/p>\n<p>Spain had waited four long weeks for that moment.<\/p>\n<p>They deserved every second of it.<\/p>\n<p>Congratulations to worthy World Champions.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, what do I know?<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m just a grumpy old man.<\/p>\n<p>Go on then\u2026 tell me what annoyed you about yesterday\u2019s match<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GOM World Cup Diary #40 Champions At Last!
