{"id":1256,"date":"2026-07-17T11:11:11","date_gmt":"2026-07-17T11:11:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/davethomasonline.com\/blog\/?p=1256"},"modified":"2026-07-17T11:11:11","modified_gmt":"2026-07-17T11:11:11","slug":"gom-world-cup-diary-36-they-think-its-all-over","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/davethomasonline.com\/blog\/gom-world-cup-diary-36-they-think-its-all-over\/","title":{"rendered":"GOM World Cup Diary #36 They Think It&#8217;s All Over&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>GOM World Cup Diary #36 They Think It&#8217;s All Over&#8230;<\/h1>\n<h2>It Is Now!<\/h2>\n<p>There are some football commentaries that become part of our national vocabulary.<\/p>\n<p>Kenneth Wolstenholme gave us the greatest of them all.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;They think it&#8217;s all over&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;It is now!&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Nearly sixty years later, those words still echo around English football whenever hope finally runs out.<\/p>\n<p>Last night, they echoed once again.<\/p>\n<p>England&#8217;s World Cup dream came to an end with a 2-1 defeat to Argentina, and if I&#8217;m honest, I&#8217;m still wondering what might have been.<\/p>\n<p>The frustrating thing is that England didn&#8217;t lose because they weren&#8217;t good enough.<\/p>\n<p>For long periods, they looked the better side.<\/p>\n<p>They were organised.<\/p>\n<p>They were disciplined.<\/p>\n<p>They took the lead.<\/p>\n<p>And then&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>They stopped playing.<\/p>\n<p>Well, perhaps that&#8217;s a little harsh.<\/p>\n<p>They stopped playing to win and started playing not to lose.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a difference.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of asking questions of Argentina, they began answering them.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of pushing forward, they retreated.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of giving the opposition something to worry about, they gave them exactly what they wanted.<\/p>\n<p>Possession.<\/p>\n<p>Territory.<\/p>\n<p>Belief.<\/p>\n<p>Football has an annoying habit of rewarding bravery and punishing hesitation.<\/p>\n<p>The deeper England dropped, the more inevitable the equaliser began to feel.<\/p>\n<p>Once Argentina sensed the momentum had shifted, there was only ever likely to be one winner.<\/p>\n<p>Credit where it&#8217;s due\u2014they kept coming, kept believing and eventually found the goals that earned them a place in the Final.<\/p>\n<p>It made me wonder how often we make exactly the same mistake in everyday life.<\/p>\n<p>We work hard to build a business&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;then become frightened of taking the next step.<\/p>\n<p>We save for years&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;then become too nervous to enjoy what we&#8217;ve earned.<\/p>\n<p>We protect what we&#8217;ve got so carefully that we forget why we wanted it in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes the safest place isn&#8217;t ten yards behind you.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes it&#8217;s ten yards further up the pitch.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s true in football.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s just as true in life.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, by the final whistle I was doing exactly what millions of England supporters were doing.<\/p>\n<p>Questioning substitutions.<\/p>\n<p>Questioning tactics.<\/p>\n<p>Questioning whether the referee had left his glasses in the dressing room.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s amazing how sensible we all become once the match has finished.<\/p>\n<p>Still, that&#8217;s football.<\/p>\n<p>It breaks your heart just often enough to make the good days feel magical.<\/p>\n<p>So, it&#8217;s another four years of waiting.<\/p>\n<p>Another four years of believing that next time might be different.<\/p>\n<p>And do you know what?<\/p>\n<p>When the next World Cup comes around, we&#8217;ll all be back.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll convince ourselves this is our year.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll study the fixtures.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll debate the squad.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll dare to dream.<\/p>\n<p>Because supporting England isn&#8217;t really about certainty.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s about hope.<\/p>\n<p>And hope, unlike football, never seems to know when the final whistle has gone.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, what do I know?<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m just a grumpy old man.<\/p>\n<p>Comments welcome.
