The knockout stages reminded us of one of football’s greatest truths yesterday.<\/p>\n
Yesterday counts for absolutely nothing.<\/p>\n
Brazil survived.<\/p>\n
Morocco knocked out Holland on penalties.<\/p>\n
And Germany, four-time world champions, were sent home by Paraguay, who only just squeezed into the knockout stages as one of the best third-placed teams.<\/p>\n
It was Germany’s first ever World Cup penalty shoot-out defeat.<\/p>\n
More remarkably, they still haven’t won a knockout match since lifting the World Cup back in 2014.<\/p>\n
Which got me thinking.<\/p>\n
Whatever happened to living on past glory?<\/p>\n
Football is wonderfully ruthless.<\/p>\n
It doesn’t care how many stars you’ve got embroidered on your shirt.<\/p>\n
It doesn’t ask how many trophies sit in your cabinet.<\/p>\n
It has no interest in what you achieved ten years ago.<\/p>\n
Every tournament starts the same way.<\/p>\n
Zero points.<\/p>\n
Twenty-two players.<\/p>\n
One ball.<\/p>\n
The rest is up to you.<\/p>\n
Life has a habit of working like that as well.<\/p>\n
We’ve all met someone who still talks about the promotion they got twenty years ago.<\/p>\n
Or the business deal they once pulled off.<\/p>\n
Or the winning goal they scored at school.<\/p>\n
Don’t get me wrong, it’s lovely to have memories.<\/p>\n
But memories don’t pay today’s bills.<\/p>\n
They don’t solve today’s problems.<\/p>\n
And they certainly don’t win today’s football matches.<\/p>\n
Of course, I should be careful what I say.<\/p>\n
I can still bore anyone within earshot about the magnificent goal I scored in a Sunday League match sometime in the late 1980s.<\/p>\n
In my version of the story it gets further out every year.<\/p>\n
By the time I’m eighty, I’ll probably be claiming it was from the halfway line.<\/p>\n
The truth is, football keeps us honest.<\/p>\n
It reminds us that reputation might earn respect, but performance earns results.<\/p>\n
Germany discovered that.<\/p>\n
Paraguay proved it.<\/p>\n
And perhaps there’s a lesson there for the rest of us.<\/p>\n
Be proud of what you’ve achieved.<\/p>\n
Just don’t expect yesterday to do today’s work.<\/p>\n
Anyway, what do I know?<\/p>\n
I’m just a grumpy old man.<\/p>\n
